Digging the Septic System

Updated: Apr 11, 2022

We are waiting for the state to grant an encroachment to the water company to run our water pipe under Soco Road onto our property. Additionally, we are waiting on our electrician to indicate he's available to wire the laundry and community room shed. So, with the running of water and electric lines on hold, we figured it was a good time to install the septic system for Phase One.

As we expected, our digging encountered quite a few rocks, but none that we had to jackhammer. The rocks did bog us down and made digging the trenches take longer. However, the soil is very good for drainage and the county inspector recently visited and was very pleased with the looks of things.

Since tiny homes are considered two bedroom dwellings, the three units of the first phase require a fifteen hundred gallon septic tank and three hundred feet of drain field. Unfortunately, we are not immune from supply chain problems. The black panels for the drain field were hard to come by locally. In fact, I had to travel six hours round trip to a supplier in South Carolina.

Hopefully, the weather will be more cooperative, the state will soon grant the encroachment, and my electrician will squeeze me in to complete his wiring, so that we can meet our goal of opening Phase One in early June.
